Otherwise known as "laughing gas", nitrous oxide is inhaled by wearing a comfortable mask over your nose. The gas helps you relax, and by simply breathing normally, you will absorb the anesthetic and quickly feel the sedative effects. It is completely safe, and the dentist has complete control over the amount of sedation you receive. When you're done, the gas wears off quickly and you’re good to go!
As the name suggests, you swallow this type of medication. It may be a pill, a combination of pills and/or a liquid syrup. This type of medication will make you quite drowsy, but you're still alert enough that we can ask you to bite down, chew, turn your head to the left or to the right…etc. However, we've found that most patients drift off to a nice nap during the procedure. This is the more popular form of sedation.
This sedation is delivered through a vein and goes to work very quickly. Within minutes, you will fall into a peaceful sleep and feel zero pain or problems during the procedure. Once you wake up, you will feel a bit loopy, so you will need a family member or friend to drive you home. An IV is the deepest form of sedation and is typically performed for more extensive procedures (wisdom teeth, root canals, etc.).
